Hornets Tripped up by Panthers; Begin Playoffs Saturday

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Lyndon State College baseball team closed out the regular season Wednesday, losing a pair of non-conference games at Plymouth State University, 14-2 and 14-1.

Game 1

PSU took the lead in the second inning on Andrew Salta's three-run home run, his second of the season.  After Lyndon got on the board with a run in the third, PSU blew it open with four runs in the fourth.  Josh Goulet hit an RBI double down the left field line, and James Garnett blasted a three-run homer, his third of the year.

The Hornets put up one run in the third and fifth innings.  In the third, Devon Rollins (Winooski, Vt.) drove a single through the left side to bring home freshman Jake Perkins (Hartford, Vt.) from third.  In the fifth, Rollins stole third and then came home on a throwing error.

The Panthers put another crooked number on the board in the sixth inning with seven runs. Highlights included an RBI double by Nate Frederick, a two-run double by Salta, and a home run by Goulet.

Rollins finished with a run and an RBI while going 2-for-3 at the plate.  Matt Page (Groton, Vt.) received his first loss of the season after throwing the first 3.2 innings and giving up seven runs (three earned) on six hits.

Tyler Brown earned the win for PSU (3-0), pitching five innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and five walks, striking out three.

Game 2

The Hornets were first on the board with one run in the opening frame.  Rollins, who had singled and then stole second base, scored on a double to left field by Mike LoVerde (Staten Island, N.Y.).

PSU plated two runs in each of the first two innings and blew the game open with five runs in the third.  A sac fly from Jarek Krajewski and a Frederick RBI single put the Panthers on the board in the first inning, Krajewski's RBI double made it 4-0 in the second, and RBI hit by Gavin Cook, Richard, and Krajewski highlighted the third inning rally.

The Panthers had one more big inning before the day was done with five runs in the fifth.  Garnett had a three-run double, Krajewski added an RBI double, and Cook rounded out the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

Rollins again went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Hornets while also adding the lone run.  Sam Ognenoff (Brattleboro, Vt.) took the loss on the mound.

The Hornets complete the regular season 22-18 overall and 13-11 in conference.  The Hornets have secured the No. 3 seed and will meet No. 2 seed New England College Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Castleton University in the North Atlantic Conference playoffs.

PSU (18-18) wraps up the regular season Thursday afternoon as the Panthers host Rhode Island College in a Little East Conference doubleheader beginning at noon.
