PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Brian Chergey recorded a double-double off the bench, scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds as Plymouth State University defeated Lyndon 86-55 in non-conference men's basketball action at Foley Gymnasium.
Chergey converted 8-of-13 shot attempts, including 3-of-6 shots from long range. He was one of five Panthers to score in double figures. Matt Cloutier and Shomari Morgan finished with 12 points for the winners, while Jesse Sabolis and Mark MacGregor contributed 10 points and seven rebounds apiece. Petey Skevas added five points and a career-best 10 assists.
The Hornets got a game-high 20 points and a team-leading eight rebounds fromJason Gray (East Thetford, Vt.), and 14 points and seven boards from Ben Sackett (Lyndonville, Vt.)
There were three lead changes in the first half and neither team led by more than four points for the first 16 minutes. Leading by one point, PSU outscored Lyndon 11-0 over the final four minutes of the half to take a 36-25 margin into the break. The Panthers got the lead up to 14 points twice in the early-going of the second half before upset-minded Lyndon State rallied.
The Hornets rattled off 10 unanswered points to cut the margin to four (45-41) with 13 minutes to play. That was as close as LSC would come, as PSU went on a 17-3 burst over the next five minutes to open up an 18-point margin (64-46) with seven minutes remaining. PSU shot 52 percent from the field for the game while holding LSC to a 30 percent shooting clip. The hosts enjoyed a 46-34 margin on the boards.
