Lyndonville, VT - Maine Maritime Academy outscored Lyndon State College 46-29 in the second half on Friday evening's North Atlantic Conference men's basketball game and came away with a 75-60 victory. The Mariners improve to 2-13 overall and 1-7 in conference and the Hornets fall to 2-12 and 2-6 in the NAC.
With Lyndon holding a 31-29 halftime lead, Maine Maritime's Brendan Newcomb (Holden, ME) connected on a three-pointer to give the Mariners a lead that they would never relinquish. The Mariners would go on to outscore the Hornets, 33-13 over the first 12 minutes of the half and build a 62-44 advantage. Lyndon would trim the deficit to nine, 66-57, following a Ricky Shuford (Prattville, AL) three-pointer with 4:24 to go, but that was as close as they would get as Lyndon would only manage a single field goal the rest of the way.
Newcomb led all scorers with 19 points and added five steals. He also scored his 1,000th collegiate point on a layup late in the first half. Riley Jorgenson (Vienna, VA) and Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, ME) added 14 points each and Andrew Liebert (Plano, TX) came off the bench to score ten points. Adam Richardson (Bradley, ME) pulled down a game high 11 rebounds for the Mariners. Shuford led the Hornets with 18 points while Corey Frost (Hamden, CT) added 12 and CJ Jimmy (Modesto, CA) chipped in 10 points.
For the game Maine Maritime shot 40.6% (26/64) from the floor, including 42.9% (12/28) from behind the three-point arc. The Hornets were 23 for 59 (39.0%) from the field, but only 10 of 34 (29.4%) from behind the arc. The Mariners made 11 of 13 free throws while the Hornets converted only four of five. Lyndon held a slim 39-38 rebounding advantage, but turned the ball over 19 times, compared to only 13 for the Mariners.
Lyndon returns to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Husson University. tip-off is 3:00 pm in Stannard Gymnsasium. Maine Maritime travels to Johnson State College on Saturday afternoon.
