NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University tennis team defeated in-state rival Lyndon State College, 9-0, ending the Hornets' four-match winning streak.
Peter Hooper and Collin Hyte set the tone for the day by teaming up for an 8-0 victory over John Kennedy (Londonderry, N.H.) and Brad Darby (Sanford, Maine) in No. 1 doubles. Travis Tyler and Chris Pashley followed with an equally impressive 8-2 win over Peter Dutile (Greene, Maine) and Ryan Maroney (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) at second doubles. In the No. 3 doubles match, Brad Hollingsworth and Bobby Whitbeck joined forces to knock off Paul Thibault (Westfield, Mass.) and Jimmy Gaskell (Washington, N.H.) 8-4.
The Cadets kept the momentum going in singles play as all six NU players won in straight sets. Hooper, who was coming off his first career loss last Saturday, beat Darby at the top spot (6-0, 6-1). Hyte got past Kennedy at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-2. Sanford cruised past Dutile, 6-0, 6-1, at third singles. At No. 4 singles, Tyler picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Maroney. Pashley upended Thibault in the fifth singles match, 6-0, 6-2. Graham Oliveira completed the clean sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Gaskell at No. 6 singles.
