Middletown, CT - Lyndon State College junior Robert Denton III (Providence, RI) set a new school record in the shot put as the Hornets' men's track and field team opened its season at the Wesleyan University Spring Classic on Saturday afternoon. Denton's record breaking throw of 8.48 meters placed 21st overall at the meet. He also finished 22nd in the 100 meters with a time of 13.81.
Joshua Guyer (Lyndonville, VT) ran a 12.19 in the 100 meters, coming close to the school record of 12.16. He finished 9th in the event.
Joshua Thibault (Glover, VT) and Hunter Torrey (Newbury, VT) both tied for 14th place in the 100 meters with a time of 12.54. Thibault and Torrey also competed in the long jump with 8th and 9th place finishes, and distances of 5.48 and 5.44 meters.
Benjamin Cornell (Burrillville, RI) finished 9th in the 1500 meters with a time of 4.57.92. H e also finished 14th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:17.58.
Matt Francis (Freeport, ME) finished in 6th place in the 5000 meters with a time of 19:38.35.
Hornet head coach Hayden Bunnell remarked "We have a lot more work to do on the Men's side, with weather hopefully getting better we can start working out on the track soon and have better workouts that will help us improve more, other than that it was not a bad start to the season."
The Hornets return to competition on Saturday, April 7th, at the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic.
